Phew! What a week it’s been…

For the past seven days I’ve been in back-to-back meetings and trainings at a self-storage seminar. At the seminar, we learned everything from best practices to how to build self-storage units from the ground up.

Needless to say, it was an enlightening and jam-packed week.

It all got me thinking about what it takes to be successful. Whether it be in a new business endeavor or otherwise, there are certainly some core principles that can inspire success, and which I try to live by.

Five Beliefs for Growing a Business

1. The learning never ends.

The more I learn, the more I realize there is even MORE I don’t know.

You’d think you would hit a point where you could confidently say, “okay, I’m really starting to master this.” But for me, it’s been an endless and exciting journey, even after several years in the real estate business.

2. The power of people.

This may sound like a strange thing to say, but I have actually begun to enjoy being the dumbest person in the room. Now, that doesn’t come without a lot of humility, and I’m not sure “enjoy” is exactly the right word. But if nothing else, I do appreciate it.

Think of it this way…

If you’re constantly surrounding yourself with people that have less or equal knowledge as you, you’re not really growing. You’re not really learning.

Do you know when I first started noticing this? In my healthcare practice.

After over 20 years of running the same business, I was lacking a challenge. I was tired of being the most experienced, knowledgeable person in the practice because I wasn’t getting any opportunities to get better or stretch my potential.

3. A rubber band is not useful until you stretch it.

The same goes for people, if you don’t stretch a little bit, you’re not going to grow. This week in our self storage meetings, there was a lot of growth. I mean, a lot! And, I loved every second of it.

Put yourself in situations where you can grow, learn and thrive, and you’ll see how your business, investments, goals – whatever it is – take flight.

4. Act NOW.

We certainly have to keep learning, but even more importantly, we have to ACT.

We’ve talked about this in a TON of our blogs! You can read all the books and go to all the seminars, but if you’re not putting that stuff into motion, what’s the point?

Last year, this whole real estate business really took off. I mean really. I was travelling like a madman, bouncing from training to training, meeting to meeting, constantly connecting with new, interesting, supremely intelligent and resourceful individuals.

Now, I thought LAST year was a lot — this year is going to be even more so.

As part of my commitment and zest for bringing you all value and sharing everything I learn, I’ve joined up with three separate mastermind groups, and have the next 6 months booked out with at least one training or meeting just about every week! Well, it sure seems that way at least.

When I think of all those, I get EXCITED — except for the part where I’m missing out on using my season tickets for football season at my alma mater. But, that’s another story!

I don’t expect any of you to be THIS extreme, where you’re on the road 90-100 days out of the year, but I do expect you to TAKE ACTION.

5. Routines = Freedom

If you want to see change, to be successful, and to take hold of your financial freedom, you have to have some routines. The most productive, successful individuals all have routines.

Take, for example, John Maxwell. He’s one of the most disciplined people I know; he’s got a number of things he does EVERYDAY to keep him grounded, focused and moving in the right direction. He writes and reads everyday, sets aside time for thinking, praying and spiritual time.

Those things work for him — what works for you?

Here’s another guy that really knows how to drive success: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

As a young guy, he came to the U.S. as a bodybuilder who didn’t even speak English! No one (including himself) could have imagined that guy would become the governor of California.

I hope you loved this video as much as I do.

So, let’s recap. How do we create our own success?

  1. Keep learning.
  2. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you.
  3. Stretch your limits.
  4. Act NOW!
  5. Set and stick to routines.

We’re all on this journey together. Thanks for being along for the ride!
